Green interiors: Make it last

By E.E. Kane

Do it once, do it right

"If you wisely invest in beauty, it will remain with you all the days of your life." Frank Lloyd Wright believed architecture should be beautiful and functional.

When contemplating any eco-friendly change to your home, focus on materials that will last. One way to ensure longevity is to steer clear of purely trendy or practical materials. Trends look passé in just a few years. Cheap (often builder-grade) materials will serve their purpose, but they won't be pleasing in the long run.

You don't have to choose the most expensive option to make a green choice in materials. It doesn't even have to be new. Reclaimed materials can last for years, and some, like reclaimed wood floors, are difficult to beat in beauty.

The greenest choice for you might be what you like best, and can imagine living with for the rest of your life. Take your time to explore the possibilities:

  • Check out books from the library, and read reviews online.

  • House blogs offer real-life advice on materials (and the best deals) without the heavy push to buy.

  • Visit friends who have tried green materials in their home remodel.
