Green your war on soap scum

By E. E. Kane

Are you fighting a soap scum war? The battle can drive the greenest idealist to harsh cleansers and scrubbers.

It is possible to remove soap scum with non-toxic materials, without damaging surfaces, the environment, or your health.  Use this four-step solution to win the war:

1. Clean: Scrape build-up with a plastic putty knife or kitchen spatula. Then use one of the following recipes, one at a time, until the surface is clean.

  • A paste of baking soda and shampoo
  • Undiluted, warmed vinegar, sprayed

Let solutions sit for at least 15 minutes, then scrub with hot water and a sponge.

2. Prevent: Wipe down tubs and shower walls after every use. Coat surfaces with lemon oil, except for floors.

3. Change habits: Switch to liquid soap, which does not contain fatty ingredients bar soaps require to hold their shape, and win the war against soap scum forever!
