Reclaimed treasures for the conscientious decorator

By E.E. Kane

Salvage style for interior decorating utilizes architectural details and other odd bits and pieces from the past, to be used as its intended purpose, or repurposed into something that adds grace to your home, be it useful or purely decorative.

Salvage style can define a home's interior, or can be added to any interior theme, from rustic cabin to ultra contemporary. The salvaged item can be 100 years old or a funky piece from the 70s.

What sets salvage style apart from simply incorporating antiques into your home? Antiques normally are used or displayed in their original (or restored) condition – more for showpieces than practicality. Salvaged items are those that might have wasted away in a landfill or dusty shed had someone not rescued them and brought them to life in a whole new way.

For example, an old baby bath might be placed in the garden as a planter. Pieces of exquisitely-detailed crown molding are mitered for a frame. Wooden shutters are pieced together and splashed with vibrant paint to make a screen.

The possibilities are endless! Salvage style appeals to the artist-carpenter-crafter-decorator-green enthusiast in us all.
